10.5 Second Futurism

Although the name Second Futurism, created by Enrico Crispolti in the Ffifties, refers to a new and different period of the movement, the critics today agree on reviewing such a radical discontinuity, emphasizing instead the different phases of development occurred in the name of innovation. The heroic futurism of the early twentieth century - openly against the "old-fogey" culture, is replaced in later years by an artistic interaction with a present that is now substantially renovated, modern and even futuristic. The Balla-Boccioni duo, interrupted by the early death of the latter, evolves to become the triad Balla-Depero-Prampolini, which in 1915 writing of the Manifesto of Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe signed by Balla and Depero. The overcoming of the figurative references in the name of a possible abstraction is followed by the definition of plastic complexes, synthetic, colorful and dynamic compositions, and of 'Mechanical art, all the way to the cosmic aero-painting developed from 1929 onwards.
