Alberto Magnelli

Descrizione:

Alberto Magnelli (1888 - 1971) is a French-Italian artist in the true sense. He spent the early years of his life in Florence and moved to Paris in 1932. Influenced by the great Florentine masters of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Magnelli - whose first work, dated 1907, comes relatively late- developed a very strong and monumental spatiality that over the years will experience a gradual transition to abstraction, explored in 1915 and finally embraced at the end of the twenties. He wrote: «I did not get to the abstract overnight, but by gradually getting rid of my natural forms». Collector and lover of the arts, such as renaissance furniture, and African artifacts, Magnelli looks at the historical avant-garde throughout his career by acquiring a personal style that appears eclectic thanks to the way different materials are used (cardboard and jute, collages and metal). This makes him one of the most important artists of the twentieth century Europe. The works are part of the valuable collection donated by the City of Florence after his death.
